GGT

About Test

The Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) assay measures the levels of GGT, an enzyme found in various tissues, with the highest concentrations in the liver and bile ducts. This test is vital for evaluating liver health and diagnosing conditions related to liver and bile duct function. Elevated GGT levels may indicate liver disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or bile duct obstruction. GGT is particularly sensitive to alcohol-related liver damage, making it a valuable marker for assessing alcohol consumption's impact on liver function. Additionally, elevated GGT levels may be observed in individuals with pancreatitis, heart failure, or certain medications' side effects. Conversely, low GGT levels are less common but could be associated with severe liver disease or malnutrition. Doctors often include GGT testing as part of comprehensive liver function panels or when assessing patients with suspected liver or bile duct disorders.
